Basic courses for the three concentrations


Comprehensive English
   This course is a fundamental compulsory course offered to the first and second year English major students to improve their overall language proficiency through a skill integration approach. The course is designed on the basis of topics (as suggested in the chosen course books) to integrate language skills, cultural understanding and pragmatic competence in order to comprehensively develop the studentsí» language proficiency and communicative ability.
Advanced English
   This course is a comprehensive compulsory course for English major students in their third and fourth years, aiming to raise studentsí» overall English performance and practical ability. After training, the students are supposed to acquire high-level skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation with a corresponding critical and cross-cultural appreciative ability in English linguistics and literature.
English Writing
   This course mainly covers the basic writing skills with the purpose of cultivating studentsí» practical competence for writing in various styles.
English Listening
   This course is offered to English major students in the first, second and third years for 6 consecutive semesters to improve their oral communication ability through focused listening practice in class and extensive listening practice after class. Listening materials of a wide range of topics are chosen from different sources, and useful listening techniques are introduced for students to apply in various listening assignments.
English Reading
   This course is a three-semester course designed to improve English reading efficiency through the use of a variety of strategies as well as develop the awareness and appreciation of western cultures and peoples.
Oral English
   This course, facilitated by a variety of classroom tasks like free-talk, dialogue, group discussion, presentation and debate, is aimed to enable students to adequately and properly express their views on issues in academic study, social life, economy, politics, science, and etc.
English Linguistics
   This course introduces some rudimentary knowledge of language, general linguistics and applied linguistics, such as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, social linguistics and SLA, so as to help the students gain insight into the nature of language and awareness of the theoretical construction of linguistics.
Selected Readings in British and American literature
   This course is a challenging, flexible, creative, and wide-ranging course which is designed to develop and intensify the studentí»s aesthetic, intellectual, and emotional response to imaginative literature. The course covers both traditional areas such as Shakespeare and Dickens and newer fields such as Emerson or Ralph Ellison in American literature. The texts include prose, poetry, fiction, and drama.
A History of British Literature
   This is an elective course, covering the social backgrounds, important literary thoughts and schools and the important writers and their major works throughout the British literary history from Old English period to the present. The course aims to help students to acquire a basic knowledge of the important British writers and their major literary works and the general development of British literature
A History of American English
   This is an elective course, covering the social backgrounds, important literary thoughts and schools and the important writers and their major works throughout the American literary history from the Colonial period to the present. The course aims to help students to acquire a basic knowledge of the important American writers and their major literary works and the general development of American literature
